Often, the littlest habits make the biggest difference. This is also the case in the realm of health. Some of the simplest habits can positively impact your health and lead to big gains when it comes to your well-being.

Bathroom Singing

Singing in the shower is a stress buster and also acts to lift your mood. Many therapists have noted the importance of this kind of activity and some studies have even shown that singing can enhance the body’s immunity by activating the spleen and increasing the percentage of antibodies. And for those of you who can’t sing to save your life – cheer up, you don’t need to be the next Lady Gaga or Elvis Presley to stay healthy – you just need to belt out a few words; and never mind if it’s not in tune!

Spicing Up Your Life

Spices have historically been prized as important items of trade. However, did you know that adding certain spices to your food could have great benefits for your health? Cumin and cloves are anti-oxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties.  Fennel is a great source of vitamins and minerals, in addition to being able to regulate bowel movements. Cinnamon is great for helping in  the management of diabetes. Turmeric is often said to be beneficial to patients with Alzheimer’s, while nutmeg can battle fungal infections. So go on and spice up your food, your body will thank you for it.

Saying Goodnight

Often, not getting enough sleep is the root cause of fatigue. Here’s a simple but powerful tip if you want to see an immediate difference in your health and energy levels: go to bed on time every day and make sure you get a full night’s sleep of 6- 8 hours at least. Without the correct amount of sleep, the brain doesn’t function properly, the digestive system can be adversely affected and certain hormones do not function as they should. Most importantly, you need to establish and stick to a healthy sleep rhythm (even during weekends!) to maintain your wellbeing. So say goodnight to keep these problems at bay.

Device Shutdown

In addition to saying goodnight and going to bed, shutting down your electronics is of utmost importance. These devices emit blue light (more than what’s found in natural light) which adversely affects levels of the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin and resets the body’s internal clock to a later schedule, while alerting the brain to stay awake. This, in turn, can lead to interrupted sleep and feelings of fatigue. To make sure you stay away from this devastating effect of blue light, turn off all electronic devices an hour or two before bedtime. Wind down with a book or any other activity that doesn’t involve staring at a screen. Taking a warm shower or sipping on a herbal tea infusion can also promote better sleep and leave you fresh and energized the next morning

Walking the Talk

Recent studies* have proven that people with sedentary jobs are at higher risk for heart disease. Since so much of our lives are dependent on our phones, perhaps adjusting our habits as we use our phones could be beneficial. Walking around while on a call is one way to make sure that our lives are a little less sedentary and healthier. Walking for five minutes every hour elevates the mood and can reduce stress and lethargy as well. So the next time you have a work call, squeeze in a workout for your body too!
