Are you putting off your annual mammogram because you’re dreading the experience? We know, getting a mammogram is no joyride – besides worrying about what your scan report may say, the test process itself is often considered uncomfortable, or even painful for some women. However, fear of pain should not discourage you from getting a test that could save your life. In this article, we’ve listed 7 tips that can ensure a more comfortable and pleasant scanning experience.

1) Schedule your mammography appointment at the right time

Many women find that their breasts become tender during their menstrual period and the days leading up to it. Since the mammography scanner compresses your breasts gently to capture an accurate image, we recommend not scheduling a mammogram during this sensitive period. Instead, take an appointment in the week after your period ends.

2) Opt for a 3D mammography with Tomosynthesis - it takes faster scans

Besides taking faster scans which minimizes pain, a 3D digital mammography with Tomosynthesis (more advanced than a standard 3D mammography), produces images with maximum clarity, which help detect small cancers early. An added benefit? This 3D scanner uses a low-dose x-ray system which greatly minimizes radiation exposure.

3) Ask for a MammoPad cushion – a soft foam that provides extra padding

A MammoPad is a soft foam pad that serves as a cushion between the breast and the mammography machine, resulting in a warmer, softer and more comfortable experience. No more having to feel that cold steel against your skin!

4) Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if necessary

A mammogram is generally just uncomfortable and not painful for most women. However, some women experience slight to severe pain. If you’ve noticed that you generally experience pain, no matter what you do, consider taking an over-the-counter pain reliever (like ibuprofen) one hour before the procedure. However, please make sure to always consult with your doctor before taking any medication.

5) Keep your trunk and feet facing forward unless you’re asked to turn

Make sure you’re not making the mammogram more uncomfortable for yourself by turning your feet and hips to the side. Relax; let your feet and hips face forward, while you turn your head sideways. Doing this will also help you move closer to the machine, resulting in a clearer scan of maximum breast tissue.

6) Talk to your technician

If your mammogram is causing you pain, talk to your technician and discuss what else can be done to ease the process. Breathe in and out slowly and deeply; and remind yourself that the scan will soon be over in a few minutes.

7) Make your scan an excuse to meet up with friends

While nobody else can take your mammogram for you, that doesn’t mean you have to go alone to the diagnostic centre. Ask your friends or family members to come along and get scanned too – that way you can have a good time catching up while waiting for your scan. Plus, you can plan a lunch or coffee get-together post your scan, which will give you something exciting to look forward to!

These 7 tips should help you sail through your scan without facing much discomfort. So go ahead and schedule that mammogram right away.
